Question: What do you think of the ufc diversifying itself and starting a poker site?
(Posted by: chris b on 2009-10-30 02:34:06)
I'm all for businesses growing, and making profits, that's what business is for. What concerns me is that they are jumping into every fad that comes along... I know it worked for MMA, but poker although big, i do not see the demand for it as there used to be. I am also kinda concerned about this trend, pertaining to unforeseen fads in the future. What are your thoughts? also, I am concerned Dana White might get it into his head to start UFL (Ultimate Football League). lol this could lead to a whole lot of WWE type mistakes. I am really liking these answers- very insightful. It will be hard to choose a best. LOL at the idea of a UFC roller deby league, hadn't thought about that. |

I completely agree with it and see why they are doing it!! Why, because the UFC is based out of Las Vegas and owned by Zuffa who is owned by Station Casinos which is owned by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. SO... why would the UFC have their own Poker Game?? Well, because they are built, based and owned by gambling. Station Casinos already have their own version of online Poker, so they simply took the same template and added the UFC as the name and it costs very little to build, run and maintain. If I was running a business and could take one of my products, throw another label on it and sell it separately I would!!! That is smart business. I don't think it will really hurt the UFC in any way, I mean if someone has enjoyed the UFC this long and doesn't get the correlation between the UFC and gambling they may be "a few sandwiches short of a picnic ". |

I understand your point but remember, UFC is a brand, the fights are simply a part of that brand, along with merchandising, media DVDs etc. I doubt it will hurt the sport, and most of it is to expand the brand and use "fads " to advertise themselves. |

Branching out into other sport could be messy but a poker site has low overheads & is is just exploiting the brand in a proven business model in another area, so shouldn't be much trouble, especially when you consider that Frank Fertitta and Lorenzo Fertitta, come from a casino background it's hardly high risk |

I love the UFC and all, but I don't understand why anyone would pick them over a site that specializes in hosting poker games. |

It just furthers my agruement that the UFC is not a legitimate MMA sporting organization. The UFC is just into drama, hype, and ppv buys, and anything else to make money. If I was Machida, after that debacle by Dana White at the press conference, I'd say No, to an immediate rematch. Make Rua climb through the ranks again. That was not a split decision call. It was unaminous. Anderson Silva pulled the refusal to fight Hendo card, I'd do it too. Before the UFL , they will start a Roller Derby team in Vegas, UW ulitmat wheels championship I am looking forward to CBS and Strikeforce. |

What if mma ends up just being a fad in 30 40 years time. by difersifying his brand he is ensuring the company wont put all its eggs into one basket and will still be around in the future even if mma isn't |

First, the poker thing is not for gambling. It's a free poker site for people to mess around and play with play money. It's a means to draw more of the casual fans. I don't think it's a grand money making scheme or anything like that. Just something to do for fun through the UFC site. |
