Is poker gambling or sport?

Question: Is poker gambling or sport?

(Posted by: Julie C on 2009-01-21 01:44:08)

Poker's a day to learn and a lifetime to master. Some people call it gambling others call it sport. If you watch it on tv its on the sports channel. Tell me, is it sport or gambling?

Poker is not a sport. Anything you can do with a Marlboro in one hand and an Icehouse in the other is not a sport. Anything you get better at as you consume alcohol is not a sport.

I don't know how a card game could be considered a sport, so I would say gambling. Sport channels have competition on them so they might have it on there because of the competitive aspect.

It's sport in the old fashioned sense of the word as in, "I have sporting blood ". Sport used to refer to all sorts competitive activities regardless of activity level, so I suppose in the previous centuries, it was probably considered a sport. Language has developed that we now think of sport as having a certain level of physical activity.

Gambling is a game. Not a sport. A "sport " is an investment of your time and energy and skill and not monetaryory " goal. Gambling does involve skill to a degree, but that skill is offset by odds that are more dictated by "Chance ", whereas a "sport " (in the classical sense) depends far less on chance and more upon one's skill. Gambling is a mental game. Sport...is a physical contest.

It can not be a sport as a competition is a sport. It is a game that does take skill, and luck, but you don't train for it as in a true sport. It is gambling since the winner is the one with the most chips or money.

Poker is NOT a competition in which success depends on the competitor's physical athletic skills. Success depends on the competitor's decisions. There is NO physical athletic skill required. To prove this, remove ALL physical moves from the competitor. Allow the competitor only to make all the decisions. Let someone else move the chips, move the cards, etc., based on those decisions. The result of the game will still be EXACTLY the same. Poker is not a sport.

It's not a sport, though Hold'em is considered a game of skill rather than a game of chance. Still, it is gambling. Tournaments are a little bit different than going to the casino and dropping your own money for chips.
